Peradeniya is a well-known suburb of Kandy, one of the major and second largest city in the country.
Many people who visit Kandy would not pass by without a detour to Peradeniya, namely for the world-
famous Peradeniya Botanical Gardens.
The premises was once the royal gardens to the Kandyan kings, but since has seen quite the
transformation, now welcoming thousands of visitors from all around the world, and from all walks of life.
The gardens are home to over 4000 species of plants that have been brought from all around the world.
A stroll through the park is sure to be relaxing, but fascinating and educational at the same time. It's a
great place to visit with family, friends, or even by yourself. The park is divided into several avenues and
plant houses; some of the most popular ones being the Orchid house, Double Coconut Avenue,
Cannonball Tree Avenue, Rose Garden, and so much more.
The town is also famous for being home to one of Sri Lanka's largest universities – University of
Peradeniya. Home to about 11,000 students, 8 academic facilities of 72 departments, several well-
equipped sporting facilities, residential facilities for all its students and staff (making it the only residential
university in Sri Lanka), as well a central library known to be one of the oldest and largest in the nation.
University of Peradeniya is also hailed to have one of the most scenic campuses in the island, full of lush
greenery, buildings with Kandyan and Indian influences, sculptures, and more. This, along with the
insight it provides into education in Sri Lanka makes it a popular stop for visitors.
