Found in the central highlands of the Island country of Sri Lanka is the chilly city of Nuwara Eliya. Surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges and acres of tea, this city is one that no one should miss on their stay here. In fact, Nuwara Eliya is one of the most visited hill stations in all of Sri Lanka.
Located almost 1900m above sea level, Nuwara Eliya became known only in the 19th Century. The older folk like to tell the tale of how a bunch of Britishers who were lost in the hills, happened to stumble upon the city, and later even decided to reside there. The story goes onto say how they built a health resort there, and it became quite popular among the old world travellers.
The seemingly endless acres of tea plantations are another attraction that the hill country boasts about. One can easily be allowed to tour tea factories and even watch the busy tea pluckers earning their livelihood. If you are lucky, some of them might be obliged to teaching you a few secrets of this ancient art.
There are many places of interest to visit while in Nuwara Eliya as well. The Horton Plains is such a place. Consisting of an almost flat surface for about 9Km, these plains are home to many tiny animals and a variety of trees. The hike around the plains is a feast to your eyes and good exercise. The trail leads you through quite a number of different terrains, including rocky areas, grassy areas, streams, muddy slopes and so much more. While wandering through the plains, you also come across the World’s end. A precipice that for all purposes seems to overlook a deep canyon that continues all the way to the foot of the mountain. It almost feels like you stare into the nothingness beyond the cliff. The feeling is quite a breath taking.
For those interested in a more relaxed stay, the city has a number of reputed hotels and guest houses all equipped with the finest modern comforts that money can buy. The busy market places, many restaurants and Gregory Lake provide hours of fun and entertainment for all. The lake, in fact, has a number of interesting rides, and the parks beside the lake have many rides, including a casual gallop on the back of a pony. Whatever you decide to do in Nuwara Eliya, it will always ensure you have a good time.
