Bicycles are the chosen form of transport for many Sri Lankans for their day-to-day lives, especially in
the rural areas. We think these folk have the right idea, because exploring a place on two wheels is one
of the most fun and revealing experiences one can have.
You should be able to rent bicycles in most towns that you can use to go around, but you can also join
cycling tours that will guide you through several towns over the period of several days (depending on the
length of the trip and the tour operator). This takes the hassle out of planning and worrying over the
logistics of such a trip, and puts you in the company of people who are experienced in this field.
Some of the best places in Sri Lanka to explore on a bike are the ancient cities of Dambulla,
Polonnaruwa, and Anuradhapura, as well as hilly cities like Kandy and Nuwera Eliya. You'll go from
sprawling greenery of the tea estates to the ancient temples of past eras, wildlife tours at nature parks to
sandy beaches and azure waters; all on something as simple as a cycle.
Being on a cycle also somehow makes you more relatable to the local people, and will surely allow to
immerse yourself into the local culture and get to know the fascinating people that live here much better.
Being out in the open, and not locked away in cars or buses, also allows you to take in the beauty of your
surroundings fully. Not to mention, you'll get plenty of exercise, which is always good.
Get yourself geared up, because its time to put the pedal to the metal - literally!
